Have you ever been in a situation where it seems as if there are a million and one things that you could do? As if there are almost infinite places that you could plug in and be a part of something? So many different choices, in fact, that it's almost paralyzing? There are so many ways that the world needs help. So many ways that we can earn money, go to school, learn a new skill, pick up a hobby. So many ways that we can reach out a hand to our neighbor, offer money to a cause or even NOT do something to show our support.
As many people as there are in this world, that's how many ways that we can be a part of something.
So how do we choose? How do I know what to go after and of what to let go?
I have been in SO MANY situations where I have tried to do what I thought someone else wanted me to do. I have tried to be other people because I thought it would make me happier not to be myself. So I signed up for tasks that I was completely unsuited and unqualified for. Granted, I made up for in enthusiasm what I lacked in skill but ultimately I was left feeling hollow and empty instead of satisfied in the work I was doing. Let me offer you some words of freedom: Don't be like me. Don't sign up to do something or take the job just because it's there and they need a warm body.
First- I need to look at what are the tasks that I love to do? For me that's being with people, sharing stories and encouraging others. I like big ideas and grand adventures. I don't mind a little bit of messy
if it means I got to be with people. I can handle direction when it's clear, but I also don't mind setting my own agenda.
Second- I'm going to look at what works for my personality type. If you don't know your type just google "find my personality type" and you will find every known way to find a personality known to man-kind. From Meyers Briggs to what kind of dog you are, there is a way to quantify who you uniquely are. Mine shows I'm outgoing, a people person. I also like order and can get wrapped up in a task until it's done. I'm an encourager, a teacher, a message bringer.
Third- Look back at what you liked to do as a kid. What were the activities you were drawn to in high school? College? When you get in a social situation think about where you gravitate to. Are you in the middle of the dance floor cutting a rug? Are you over at the snack table assessing the treats? Or maybe you're tucked away in a corner having a one on one with someone. If you're an extrovert- please stay away from the solo jobs. If you cringe at being around more than two people at a time, please don't sign up to host the class party.
Whatever your heart is whispering to you, whenever you feel that little spark of joy in your actions go towards that. Stay in that lane. That's what you were made to do. Don't try to do something someone else is doing because you think it's flashier.
Just be you. 'Cause the world needs you, not another someone else.

I gotta know how to stay in my lane.
