We've all been to a bank. Or maybe you haven't and you stuff your cash into a mattress.
But we all have a working knowledge of what a bank is. A place you can put your money and earn a certain amount of interest depending on how daring you want to be with your monies. We make these deposits either weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Or maybe even more spread out. Regardless of the frequency of the deposit into the bank, we are giving the bank permission to hold our money. We have entrusted someone or something outside of ourselves to keep our money safe.
In life, this is true as well. But instead of giving things away to others to handle, we ourselves are giving things for which to care. Deposits are made into our "bank" to manage. Deposits are made from our family of origin. Beliefs and family mottos we pick up intentionally or just from observation. Deposits are also made into us by friends, teachers and coaches. We take in these "deposits" as lessons, teachings, sermons, deep conversations with friends.
When you're a kid you don't get a lot of say as to what is deposited into you. And you don't even really understand the messages poured into you until you can get some perspective via age and/or distance. We take in these deposits and they sit in our brain. Affecting our emotions and our interpretation of the world. Maybe the deposits you received were tainted by half-truths. Things like we can't show our feelings. We have to always keep the peace. We don't talk about the hard stuff. Just pat that on down and keep it buried. There's no use airing dirty laundry. Perhaps you're deposits were more like pull up your bootstraps. Boys don't cry. Girls are to emotional. Life is about working hard, not dreaming. Why do you need to rock the boat? Let's have no drama even if it means you need to be silent.
These kind of deposits are toxic and dangerous. |But they're so common that they have seeped into our culture. We are a people desperate to be seen as enough. Like a pack of middle schoolers, we don't want to stand out to much so we keep towing the line that everything is alright. That we are just FINE thank-you. But really, each of us is wondering how the H - E- double hockey sticks we got to this place. A place of being exhausted from the hustle of being enough. A place of bone-weary just over trying to convince the world that you are who they want you to be.
Because you know deep down in your soul that you didn't get the full-deposit, you only got half of it.
We receive as much from our parents as they can give us. But the reality is they (and those of us who are parents) are only able to deposit into others what we ourselves have to give. We can only give to others what we know. If we were really blessed then there were some other people along the way who also invested into us. Those coaches, teachers or good friends along the way who have also put a bit, or a whole lot, of themselves into us. That's still not everything available to you.
Jesus alone is enough. He comes to fill us up in a way that is completely unique to each of us. For me it was about trusting God. It was about learning that if I'm speaking in truth and love than I'm given the freedom to speak. I had to be filled with Jesus so I can go into the hard places with my family and friends and mission work. So I can go into the messy places and be meddlesome.
Jesus is there. He is waiting for you. Come all you weak and heavy-laden. He will give you rest. He is your enough.

There is more for you.
What you need, what we all need, is Jesus. He alone is the one who fills us up so completely that we have an overflow. And if you feel you know Jesus, but you're still chasing after what the world says will fill you up (approval of man, material things, the "right" things) than maybe you don't know
Jesus as well as you think you do.
Jesus as well as you think you do.
