Femme Friday-Jochebed

After reading about Shiprah and Puah I came across some rabbinical commentary that mentioned these two courageous midwives were Jochebed and Miriam. Miriam was the sister of Moses. Accredited with saving his life. Jochebed is the mother of Moses. The brave and defiant mother who chose to believe God would bless her son rather than allow her son to die at the hands of a jealous Pharoah.

Jochebed already had two children, Aaron and Miriam. Each of them would help Moses lead the Israelites to freedom. Why risk the wrath of the government when she had already been given two children? Was there a dream for Jochebed that indicated one of her children would do great things for Jehovah? Was Jochebed simply fulfilling the commandment given to  Noah after the flood to be fruitful and multiply? It could simply be that no mother ever desires to end a child's life. No matter the governing rules and authorities.

Jochebed was a woman of valor and courage. Not only did she keep her son alive. She also sent her son to the bed of her enemy. Scripture tells us that Jochebed wrapped her son in linen and then placed him in a basket of reeds. She then sent the basket down the river. Telling Miriam to keep watch over it. The basket bumped into the shoreline as the queen of Egypt was taking a bath. She drew the basket out of the water and called the baby Moses. Jochebed's faith in God was rewarded then. Because Moses was now an adopted son of Egypt, he would need a wet-nurse. Miriam pipes up to the queen and says she knows someone who can help. Jochebed is given the job to nurse her own baby. And she will get paid! God not only saved Moses, He also rewarded the prayers of Jochebed. God reunited mother and son for the next few years.

Jochebed's story shows us the power of a persistently praying mother. How God really does care for the smallest of people. We see how God's glory and plan begins manifesting long before the fruition comes to light for us. All this we can reflect on through the words about a mom who chose God over government.
